Black Ops II Makes More Than $500 Million In The First 24 Hours

Once again the Call of Duty franchise has the biggest launch of the year, making it the fourth in a row so far. Apparently people just can’t get enough of CoD as Activision today announced that the highly-aniticipated Black Ops II has earned them more than $500 million with worldwide sales in just the first 24 hours of its release.

Bobby Kotick (CEO, Activision Blizzard) goes on to say:

With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row, life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars,” the two most successful movie franchises of all time. Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013.

Eric Hirshberg (CEO of Activision Publishing) tunes in as well:

Call of Duty has become more than a product people buy, it’s become a brand people buy into.  And every November we do more than just launch a game, we kick off an annual, unofficial but worldwide phenomenon called Call of Duty seaso. I want to thank our incredible team at Treyarch for making an amazing game, everyone at Activision for making this brand a force of nature and our retail partners for their unprecedented support of this franchise. But most importantly I want to thank our millions of fans for their continued support and loyalty and for making us better every day.

I think it’s more than safe to assume that we will be seeing many more CoD titles hitting the shelves in the coming years, but will they keep increasing in sales or does Black Ops II mark the high point for the series?

  1. The Absent Game

Involving me and my husband we’ve owned far more MP3 players over time than I can count, together with Sansas, iRivers, iPods (traditional & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of gamers.
