The land of television and comic books has lost one of it’s most iconic figures. On Friday night, June 9th, the legendary actor died of “a short but brave battle with leukemia” according to a statement by his family. The actor was 88 years old.
Adam West was best known for his iconic role as Batman, and his alter ego Bruce Wayne, in the timelessly popular 1960’s tv show “Batman”. His co-star from the popular show, Burt Ward, gave heartfelt statements remembering their beloved co-star and close friend to Fox News after learning of his death.
“This is a terribly unexpected loss of my lifelong friend. I will forever miss him.” said Ward, who portrayed Robin in the 1960’s show. “There are several fine actors who have portrayed Batman in films, in my eyes there was only one real Batman and that is and always will be Adam West; He was truly the Bright Knight.”
West was also widely known for playing a fictionalized version of himself as the Mayor of Quahog on the hit animated comedy series, Family Guy. Family guy’s creator, Seth McFarlane, also paid an emotional tribute to the longtime cast member.
“Family Guy has lost its mayor, and I have lost a friend.” said McFarlane in a heartfelt Twitter post. “Adam West was a joy to work with, and the kind of guy you always wanted to be around.” Other actors who have donned the cowl, including Ben Affleck and Val Kilmer also paid their respects to the actor.
West has appeared in over 30 films, including two recent animated feature length films where he and his co-stars Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprised their iconic roles from the 1960’s television show.
Whether you’re old enough to remember coming home at night to watch Adam West “at the same bat time, same bat channel”, or you’re young and love his exaggerated character on Family Guy, West is sure to have brought a smile to your face. Rest in peace to America’s original Batman, Adam West.
