There are many great educational opportunities in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Conventionally located just two short hours from Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Manhattan, Wilkes-Barre makes an excellent choice for anyone looking to get away for a real college experience.
Wilkes-Barre was originally founded in 1769. It was not until 1806 that it became formally incorporated. Due to the discover of nearby coal reserves, the city rapidly grew in the 19th century. It was flooded with hundreds of thousands of immigrants who provided a labor force of the local mines. It was the coal mining that fueled, and industrialized the city. It reached the height of it’s prosperity in the first half of the 20th century.
The population peaked at roughly 90,000.Unfortunately, during World War II, the cities economy declined due to the collapse of the industry. Additionally, the Knox Mine disaster accelerated the decline in large portions, and the mines could not be reopened. Present day Wilkes-Barre has about 41,000 people, making it the largest city in Luzerne County. It is also the 13th-largest city in all of Pennsylvania.
Colleges Near Wilkes-Barre
There are three large colleges/universities located near Wilkes-Barre. Two of them are located directly in the city, King’s and Wilkes, and Luzerne County Community College is located about 8 miles away.
All three are a great choice for anyone looking to go away for school. They are also conveniently located near many hotels in Wilkes-Barre. Perfect for if friends and family ever come to visit.
King’s College covers nearly 50 acres in downtown Wilkes-Barre (adjacent to the Susquehanna River). And situated in the middle of the campus is Monarch Court, which ahs many activities. The area also includes a brick-paved area at it’s center, perfect for parking.
The new King’s on the Square facility is a center for learning and living in the heart of downtown Wilkes-Barre. King’s on the Square is home to a number of in-demand programs, including Physician Assistant Studies, Athletic Training, and Exercise Science.
The new center offers attractive and safe student residences that bring students in direct contact with the downtown environment. Wilkes University offers over a dozen programs within its graduate school programs. The Wilkes Graduate Teacher Education Program hosts classes online and at classroom sites across Pennsylvania. Some of the Wilkes Graduate Teacher Education programs are hosted entirely online.
Other graduate programs such as nursing, creative writing, and bioengineering are also offered at the university. The MBA program within the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership was ranked among the top ten MBA programs in the state of Pennsylvania. It is a great option as classes generally only have 20-30 students, making it easier to connect with the teachers and really focus on studies.
Luzerne County Community College
Luzerne County Community College is a public two-year college that offers associate degrees, certificates, and diploma programs. It is a great starting point for anyone beginning their career, or anyone who is unsure what to major in. Start out at LCC taking only core classes, and transfer to a 4 year school.
In 1967 the first class of 836 students attended classes in two buildings in downtown Wilkes-Barre located near the Hotel Sterling. The college offered 11 programs at the time with tuition at only $12.50 per credit. Crazy, huh?
