According to New Scientist the University of Melbourne, Australia found that the Balance board, designed to get your fat jiggling is almost as accurate as a $19,500 (AUD) piece of equipment.
“Force platforms” are the equipment in question, these are used in many physio clincs helping people to learn to stand again but the price often puts them out of the grasp of smaller clincs. Ross Clark decided to take apart the balance board and see just how well the strain gauges and accelerometers performed.
"We found the data to be excellent. I was shocked given the price: it was an extremely impressive strain gauge set-up." Said Clark going on to say "The low price of the Wii kit is now seeing it used to assess rehabilitation after stroke, traumatic brain injuries and to examine standing balance in children who were born pre-term,"
